Engineered Lumber Is Great for Larger Spans
This Photo shows an engineered floor system that uses an open web. The strength of the beam is due to the height of the beam. The small strip of wood at the bottom is in tension. It supports all the load from the floor above. This open web design is great for airflow and insulation.
Engieered lumber is about 50 percent more expensive than standard lumber. These solutions are usually only used when the span is too great for standard lumber.
