How To Install A Programmable Low-voltage Thermostat

Thermostat Installation
The thermostat is a temperature-sensitive control that automatically regulates heating and air-conditioning units in your home. Powered by a transformer that reduces 120 volts to 24 volts, a low-voltage thermostat is durable and easy to install. Precautions should be taken to insure the wire connections don?t become loose or dirty and free from corrosion. A new programmable thermostat can often cut energy costs by 35 percent, but be sure to purchase a new thermostat with the same amp ratings equivalent to the old thermostat.

What you Need Tools: screwdriver, masking tape Materials: programmable low-voltage thermostat, low voltage 4 conductor cable (if new install)

STEP 1: Turn off the power to the heating and air-conditioning unit at the main electric panel.

STEP 2: Remove the thermostat cover plate, unscrew the mounting screws and remove the body of the thermostat.

STEP 3: Disconnect each wire and label with the masking tape to identify their correct terminal locations (R, W, B)

STEP 4: After all wires have been disconnected, remove the base mounting screws and secure the low-voltage wires against the wall with tape.

STEP 5: Set the new thermostat base into the desired position on the wall and then pass the wires through the base.

STEP 6: Mount the base onto the wall with mounting screws and then connect the wires to the appropriate screw terminals on the base of the thermostat. (As a guide, refer the manufacturers? directions.)

STEP 7: After installing batteries in the thermostat body, attach the new cover plate.

STEP 8: Turn on the power to the heating and air conditioning at the electric panel, and finally adjust the thermostat to your desired setting.
