The down side to a metal roof is that the metal can corrode if the protective coating is damaged. The key to getting a long life (without fading, chalking, staining or chemicals breakdown) from you metal roof is to select the best paint available. The best quality panels contain Polyvinylidene Fluoride or PVDF (also know as Kynar). Coatings with a 70% Kynar in the resin are the most durable. Higher and lower concentrations do not have the same durability. If you buy roofing that is coated with Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000, you are assured of the optimum ratio of Kynar to pigment that will make you roof last as long as possible.
