Engineered Lumber Is Great for Larger Spans

Engineered Joists
This Photo shows an engineered floor system that uses an open web. The strength of the beam is due to the height of the beam. The small strip of wood at the bottom is in tension. It supports all the load from the floor above. This open web design is great for airflow and insulation.

Engieered lumber is about 50 percent more expensive than standard lumber. These solutions are usually only used when the span is too great for standard lumber.

TJI joists are structural wood I-sections manufactured using Microllam® LVL flanges and OSB webs. The combination of laminated flanges with a OSB web result in consistent lumber that is very straight and very light when compared to a solid beam of comparible strenght.

Since some structural beams have composite wood fibers as a structural element, they must be kept dry. Exposure to moisture can cause failure in the beam
