DIY and Pro Help With Your Home Projects
![]() Make sure you have a GFI outlet or breaker for the dishwasher. Electricity and water are a lethal combination and a GFI can save your life if you or your kids ever mix the two. Do not install the GFI on at the box where you wire in the dishwasher. Install your GFI on one of the outlet along the backsplash of the countertop and wire the dishwasher box so it is protected by the upstream GFI. This way it will obvious and easy to reset the GFI if there is a problem. If you are installing the dishwasher in a house that is worth over $500K and the style works with your kitchen, I recommend installing a stainless steel dishwasher. It is a huge selling point for kitchen these days. Stainless steel appliance is always listed as one of the selling features for more expensive homes and the difference in cost is not that much. The hot water supply to the dishwasher can be controlled with the same pipe to the sink with a brass T-fitting on the hot water pipe. Remember that an air gap needs to be mounted through the top of the sink or within a sink disposal and will prevent drain clogs from backing up into the dishwasher. What You Need Tools: power drill, screwdriver, utility knife, 2-inch hole saw, pliers. Materials: drain hose, steel supply tube, air gap (if needed), waste-T tailpiece, L-fitting, 12-gauge power cord, rubber connector 1: If needed, mount the air gap to the top of sink counter and attach gap by tightening nut over the tailpiece. 2: Using 2-inch hole saw, drill holes in the side of sink base cabinet for plumbing and electrical lines. 3: Slide the dishwasher into place feeding hoses and supply lines in through hole in cabinet side. 4: If using air gap, connect the drain hose for the dishwasher to straight nipple using a hose clamp. (Cut to correct length if needed.) Connect larger angled nipple to disposer with hose using hose clamps. 5: If the sink does not have a disposer, attach a waste-T tailpiece to strainer and connect the drain hose to waste-T nipple. 6: Attach the dishwasher supply tube to the hot water shutoff valve. Replace single outlet shutoff valve with multiple outlet shutoff valve if needed. 7: Uncover dishwasher access panel and attach L-fitting to threaded opening for the water valve and tighten securely. 8: Take the supply tube from the hot water pipe and attach to the L-fitting on dishwasher. 9: Uncover dishwasher electrical box, and run power cord to hookup. Strip a half inch of insulation of cord wire. 10: Connect black wires together and white wires together using a wire nut. Attach the green wire to ground screw. 11: Replace the electrical box cover and access panel. 12: Finally, make sure dishwasher is level and secure dishwasher into place.
