· Some people prefer wood shingles because they are so flammable. If a fire starts inside the house, it can easily burn through the roof and does not trap the flames and carbon monoxide inside the house. An asphalt roof does not burn so an interior fire is trapped. The flames and gas are contained inside the house resulting in more damage to the house and occupants.
· Quality matters on cedar shingles. The heartwood of old growth western red cedar is rated as extremely durable because of its extractives. There is consensus that second growth timber is not as durable as the old-growth timber.
· Wood shingle roofs are best in moderate weather areas. Excessive dry are a significant fire risk while significant wet weather are prone to decay. Although cedar has a long history in coastal areas, it is not the best roofing investment.

· Some cedar shingles are treated with preservatives and flame-retardants to extend the safety and life of the shingles.
· Wood shingles can be smooth or rough. Rough shingle give a more rustic look. Rough shingle are sometimes called shake.
· Cedar shake comes in various lengths so that you can control the overlap. The greater the overlap, the more weatherproof the roof. Cedar shingles are made in random widths. The random look of cedar single adds to the rustic feel.
· Older cedar shingles were installed sheathing (1x4 or 1x6 boards) that were spaced on 6 to 12 inch centers. This allowed the roof to breath and reduced the buildup of moisture under the shingles. Frequently builders would use scraps of wood from other parts of the house as the sheathing.
· Valleys in cedar roofs are usually exposed metal (aluminum or galvanized steel) that is put down before the singles are added. The water flows from the singles into the valley and off the roof. · Modern shingle roofs maybe built on a plywood sheathing. The 1x4 runners are added on top of the base to allow the roof to breath. This extends the life of the roof.
· Wood Shingles absorb moisture because their lower edge is exposed end grain. This end grain works like a straw to wick in moisture. The moisture results in swelling and shrinking of the wood that can eventually result in cracks. Decay occurs when untreated wood remains wet for long periods.
· Cedar roof require periodic maintenance including annual treatment with a decay inhibitor.
· Details on shingle and shake grades and application procedures are available from the Red Cedar Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau (515 116 Ave. NE, Suite 275, Bellevue, WA 98004).
